Land Steward
The San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust (SBMLT) is a charitable nonprofit organization
dedicated to preserving forest open space and wildlife habitat on private lands within the San
Bernardino Nation Forest to help safeguard the natural mountain environment.
The Land Steward will be responsible for overseeing the Moonridge Pebble Plain
Ecological Reserve and other lands owned by SBMLT for conservation protection. The Land
Steward will conduct regular site inspections and perform maintenance duties that include
habitat restoration, boundary control, public contact, overseeing volunteers, and record
keeping. The Land Steward may also assist in grant writing, fundraising activities, and
facilitating environmental education and public outreach.
Preferred qualities of a Land Steward include:
- Commitment to SBMLT’s mission, values, and goals
- Responsible, punctual, and mindful of safety
- Good communication skills and an ability to handle unruly behavior effectively and with
- discretion
- High school diploma/GED required, some college or a college degree preferred
- Proficiency in writing, editing, data collection, computer and office skills
- Good work ethic, organizational skills, ability to multitask, work independently and self-
- manage and to prioritize effectively for maximum efficiency
- Ability to collaborate in teamwork with other staff, volunteers and affiliates
- Familiarity with maps and GIS platforms
- Operate a 4x4 vehicle on off-road conditions, use mechanical tools in basic carpentry,
- and maintenance tasks
- Ability to hike six miles on uneven terrain in all weather; lift, carry, pull and push a
- minimum of 50lbs; and to work on weekend days, and some evenings and holidays
- Willingness to pitch in and do what's needed to complete an urgent task
